MUSIC SHARE
Music Share is an opportunity for students in Grades One to Six to“show and tell” their musical interests and/or talents. What can students present?
How do students submit their Music Share requests?
What is expected of the presenters? Students who will be presenting are expected to provide the title and the name of the composer/singer/band of their piece. Students are also encouraged to provide some background information about their selection, if possible. Here are some examples:
All students will be evaluated on their audience behavior and audienceparticipation. An example of audience participation may include asking questions appropriate to the presentation. An example of respectful behavior would be not talking during a presentation. This activity will run from June 3rd to June 25th. Due to the number of students participating in this activity and the busyness of this month, it would be appreciated if submissions were received no later than Monday, June 10th. This will allow time for us to peruse song lyrics and video content as well as schedule student time for sharing. If your child wishes to participate, please reply by email or print and send in the form below with details about your child’s selection. Forms/emails must be submitted by Monday, June 10th. Below is the criteria to be used to assess their skill development: (Grade Three/PT2/PT3) Tone Plays with a gentle, beautiful tone Tonguing Starts the note with “doo” or “too” Fingering Uses correct fingering Finger Positions Covers holes completely, uses finger-pads Rhythms Plays rhythms accurately Fluency Plays complete example on the first attempt Practice Skills Uses preparation time effectively (rhythm homework/practice sheets) Off-staff melodies, such as "Hot Cross Buns", will also be used to develop fingering/technique. Grades 1-6 had the opportunity to participate in Music Share, one of our most anticipated units. It's always exciting to see what our Grade 1s share for their first music presentations and the results were great! Our second Music Share will be in June and I already have students telling me what they're planning to do :). I love it!
The Kindergarteners learned the poem "Snowman Joe". The process went as outlined:
Our Virtue this month: Perseverance This month we listened to two songs about perseverance:
We also practiced the song "Highway of Heroes" by The Trews in preparation for our Remembrance Day assembly. Ask your child to show you the actions for the chorus. The following is a breakdown of our activities for this month: Grade Three Our focus was on exploration of form (the structure/sections of music) through movement using the song "March of the Goblins" by Boris Berlin. In the coming weeks we will be playing xylophones and rhythm instruments to accompany the song as well as reading the form and the music symbols on the written score. Grade Two Our focus this month was using speech and instruments for the chant, "Early in the Morning". Students reviewed posture, positioning and playing for the xylophones as well as holding mallets correctly while playing. In the coming weeks we will be singing winter songs and carols, both in French and English. Grade One This month we focused on the concept of Rhythm (steady beat) and the skill of playing an instrument. We are saying the chant "I Think Music's Neat" to show steady beat (movement and pre-notation). From this, we will be working towards rhythmic notation (e.g. quarter/eighth notes). Also in weeks to come we will be using instruments to accompany a familiar story as well as singing winter songs/carols, both in French and English. Kindergarten Students have now learned all four families of rhythm instruments. They are: woods, skins, metals, and shakers/scrapers. We will continue to use these instruments to accompany our songs and stories in the coming weeks. At present, we are practicing listening to and clapping the syllables (rhythm) in our first name. We are also playing the "Colour Game", a movement-based activity, which focuses on watching a "conductor". Lastly, we are finishing up a story called "The Quiet Book"; our next book will be "The Loud Book". Ask your child to say the poem about our four voices ("This is my speaking voice, I use it every day...") MUSIC SHARE IS COMING! MUSIC SHARE IS COMING! Music Share is an opportunity for students in Grades One to Three to share their musical interests. This popular unit will begin in January(dates/times TBD). Please refer to your weekly School Communication Newsletter for upcoming information. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me. Thank you! Here's a breakdown of what we did this month in Music:
KINDERGARTEN We continue to work on listening to and assessing the number of syllables (sounds) in our first names. We started with "Say and Clap" and have now progressed to "Think and Clap". A bit of challenge at first but victorious in the end! As an introduction to dynamics (quiet and loud), we read "The Quiet Book" and "The Loud Book" by Deborah Underwood. Great sound effects were provided by all classes :) "The Colour Game" was a movement-based activity where students had to recognize colour and movement changes. It was also an introduction to watching a "conductor". red = stop green = go yellow = jog blue = tiptoe orange = jump Seasonal songs (action songs) practiced in class were:
Next month: Winter, Bears GRADE ONE We completed our "Bonjour" partner work, complete with singing and moving. Students were always excited to see who they would end up with next after completing the turns. Steady beat work continued with "I Think Music's Neat". Next month we move into providing music syllables for our beats. The story of the "Gingerbread Boy" was read with sound effects provided for the animals. Afterwards, the students decided on instruments from the non-pitched percussion families (woods, metals, skins, scrapers/shakers) to support the story. Next month: Music Share, Bears, Steady Beat/"Ta" and "Ti-ti" GRADE TWO Partner work for the "Bonjour" song. See Grade One write-up above. The story of "The Nutcracker" was our focus this month. Some things we found out:
GRADE THREE We continued to explore the concept of form using the piece "March of the Goblins" by Boris Berlin. Pitched instruments were used to discover harmony (chords) as well as review playing skills. We learned info about one of "Instrument Bingo" instruments: The Harp. Next month: Music Share, music notation (written), Instrument Bingo Here's what we did for the month of October:

Welcome back to Music!
Mme Edgett and I look forward to teaching Varsity Acres' Music program together. Mme Edgett will be teaching from Grades Three(Salle 10) to Six and I will be teaching Kindergarten to Grade Three (PT2 and PT3). We will be integrating our Positivi-Tree as a theme for this year's music program. Our first theme of the year is: COURAGE. We will be singing a modified version of the song "Brave" by Sara Bareilles as a whole school in preparation for our Terry Fox assembly.
